Being
Prepared for out-of-home events (parties, playdates and holidays)
Educating others about your child's food allergy is
always the first step. Contact parents before parties and playdates
to review what foods will be served. Let them know how to recognize
a reaction, and make sure they have your phone number in case of an
emergency. Remember, though, that the burden of keeping your child
safe rests squarely on your shoulders. Always send in a safe snack
your child can enjoy if he/she is allergic to the cake or other foods.
Always have your child wear a medical id bracelet and
carry an EpiPen® (see
products for stylish
EpiPen® carriers) and review with your child the
foods she can or cannot eat. Explain to her how to ask for help, if
necessary. Finally, teach your child to save any foods that she's not
certain is safe. When she gets home, she can trade the food for a treat
from home.
